c0mpiled-5: Future Interfaces
by lucas fedronic340 reads
Overview
We partnered with UCSD's Startup Incubator Club to bring together 100+ builders in a packed venue! Sky Yang and Neo Lee – co-founders of ImagineAI (YC F25) and UCSD alumni – made their return to campus and helped us judge 31 submissions alongside our team of remote judges. With a theme of "Future Interfaces", we saw hacks involving VR headsets, openclaw bots running on Mac minis, and more!
Reflections
- Good: Our new-and-improved judging system worked great (shoutout Armel for the suggestion)! We first had each of our judges do an initial pass over every submission, scoring teams out of 10 (based on our rubric). Meanwhile, I kept track of the projects with high average scores, putting together a shortlist. The judges then met as a group to discuss the standout teams and finalize the winners.
- Good: We also experimented with live pitches for the first time! In the past, we've usually been limited by time, but a slightly longer schedule enabled us to bring our finalists up to the stage. Seeing the pitches live gave our judges much more signal than a pre-recorded demo could, and our final rankings felt better informed.
- Good: Venue set-up was excellent; great energy in the room and tons of great conversations between teams and judges.
- Bad: In the 30 minutes we gave finalists to prepare their pitches, many of the other participants went home. When trying live pitches again in the future, we'll probably have all teams prepare pitch decks during the judging period, and better incentivize hackers to stick around.
- Observation: Saw quite a bit of hardware at this one! Our 2nd place winners (The Closet) used XR headsets to build their 3D design app, and we also got to see an openclaw set-up (raspberry pi + camera) and an inertial electronic musical instrument.
