c0mpiled-4: Texas Ventures Group x Transpose

by lucas fedronic741 reads

Overview

We collaborated with Texas Venture Group to bring c0mpiled to 120+ builders at UT Austin. It was our most in-demand hackathon to date, seeing over 450+ signups! We ended the night with 36 submissions solving problems across energy and urban systems, ranging from urban tunneling visualizers to interactive energy grid simulations.

Reflections

  • Good: Participants were super curious during the fireside and asked strong questions.
  • Good: We had a great group of judges. Our in-person team connected really well with participants – there was lots of genuine curiosity in the room and great conversations.
  • Good: Though some students struggled to ideate, they were very proactive about going up to our judges and discussing ideas.
  • Bad: The theme (Energy and Urban Tech) was a bit tough for students to tackle. It was difficult to come up with original ideas without domain expertise, so we ended up seeing a lot of similar projects.
  • Bad: Our hackathon venue (big amphitheater lecture hall) was not the most conducive for group work and mingling. We saw a lot of teams leave the room to find their own spaces to work, which resulted in less energy and mixing.
  • Bad: Our judging system wasn't the smoothest and ran into some delays. We assigned half of the submissions to our in-person judges, gathering in a room to watch the videos together (took too long). Meanwhile, our remote judges tackled the other half. Reconvening to choose winners proved tough because each group lacked context about the other submissions.
  • Observation: There were lots of cool simulation/visualization projects, but the setup/generation process wasn't always showcased in the demos (probably just the demo time limit coming into play). Judges were left wanting more!
