c0mpiled-3: The Climate Stack

by lucas fedronic357 reads

Overview

c0mpiled-3/ucd was our first of 5+ upcoming collegiate hackathons! We welcomed 75+ talented builders to a distinctively Davis-themed challenge: the climate and agriculture tech space. After a cozy fireside chat with our three lovely founders (thanks Coline, Austin and Henry!) we got to building and ended the night with 24 strong project submissions.

Reflections

  • Good: Fireside chat was a great way to engage our founders/judges and helped kick off connections with participants
  • Good: Founders were kind enough to stay late and had great, impactful conversations with the winners and other interested builders
  • Bad: Improve submission process. Long text descriptions didn't add much info on top of videos and mostly slowed things down. Partial submissions/resubmissions complicated clean division of judging labour.
  • Bad: Event start was a bit disorganized and participants were unsure of the schedule. This hindered mingling because some teams jumped into hacking straightaway. Going forward, I'll post the schedule on Luma prior to the event, and have an earlier announcement at the event to make things more clear.
  • Observation: Would be valuable to have a more structured way of connecting people. Several participants (and founders) expressed interest in connecting with people of a certain background. Great opportunity to upgrade my existing participant screener (blog post coming soon!)
  • Observation: We missed check-ins at the beginning, so Jake and I went around checking participants in later. Was actually a great way to learn a bit about each project and make sure any questions/concerns were addressed. Learning is to still check-in participants at the start, but also do a comprehensive walkaround later to see where teams are at.
  • Observation: Many submissions featured beautiful and useful simulations, modeling the spread of wildfires, pest swarms, drones, etc. Great project format for a hackathon because it's visually appealing and a perfect AI use-case. Some pitches could have been strengthened by validating the accuracy and groundedness of simulations.
  • Observation: Going forward, will do quick workshops on any dev tools / sponsors to get builders up and running. Since our hackathons are super quick, many participants feel hesitant about allocating time to set-up. We can help!
